Learning the art of chocolate making in the heart of Edinburgh

by Martina Berger

Few years ago we decided to bring the gift of experience into our boys’ lives. Up to this day these are the best gifts they have had, the ones they remember the most and the ones they are so eager to repeat.

There is not a toy or thing in the world that can replace the adrenaline rush on a Star Flyer or a horse riding lesson, or the ultimate satisfaction and that warm bubbly feeling one gets from indulging in some seriously good chocolate. Yup, our last experience (squeezed in between two lockdowns) was a visit to chocolate heaven of The Chocolatarium.

This micro choco factory in Edinburgh’s center, greeted us with a welcome drink in the heart of the Cacao Jungle – warm chocolate, with an orange twist. With all the taste buds on high alert we dived into the history of chocolate making, learning all about how it’s made and it’s travels from a wee cocoa bean to our mouth.

Next step – making our own chocolate, all personalized and as unique as it gets. Want a happy kid? Give them 20 something jars of toppings and reign over a melted chocolate. Ok, it made me pretty happy as well.

By now we’ve tasted few different types of choco deliciousness, and one wouldn’t complain if the tour was over then and there, but there was more..loads more.

Tasting chocolates from Scotland and all over the world. What can I say except it wasn’t an easy job. Milk, drak, white, whiskey, haggis (yes, that too! why? who knows, but still you can’t resist trying), camel milk…oh man..it was hard decision to stop on a certain number of samples. Even just writing this I get that feeling like I’m starting to drool. No, I am actually drooling. I’ll have to go and get something sweet for my buds.

Back now, and to wrap things up – we chose a rainy day for this visit, but Chocolatarium is worth the visit even on those rare sunny occasions. Want to know how Charlie felt, this is the place!
